• Welcome to our first experiment in digital fellowship!

Join Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church as we read every word in the Gospel of Luke for Lent.

As you read each day, please share your reflections, comments, and questions. This blog is open to the public, so please use discretion about sharing personal information.

There are 40 days in Lent, not counting Sundays which traditionally are not numbered in the 40 days. There will be one reading from Luke’s Gospel for each of the 40 days. We will also read a passage for each Sunday in Lent from the New Common Lectionary. The Lectionary readings do not coordinate with our reading through the entire Gospel of Luke.

Today is Maundy Thursday – the day we remember Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. It is also an appropriate day to reflect upon the love that sent Jesus to the cross.

Today in our Luke in Lent Blog we find ourselves past the Last Supper and on to the Crucifixion of Jesus. We read today how Jesus was lead away to the cross, how his body placed on the cross, how he died on the cross and how he was taken down from the cross and laid in a tomb.

In this passage we see the depth of human sin (the mocking of Jesus and the crowd’s lack of compassion) and the fullness of God’s grace (“Father forgive them. They do not know what they are doing.”).  We also experience Jesus’ faithfulness to God.   Though reading of Jesus’ journey to the cross is painful, it is powerful and should have great meaning for us.

Therefore, as we prepare ourselves for Easter ask yourself, “Why should this passage be central to our resurrection faith?” “How do we experience God’s grace through Christ’s faithfulness?” “How can our daily living honor the sacrifice Jesus made for us?”
