• Welcome to our first experiment in digital fellowship!

Join Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church as we read every word in the Gospel of Luke for Lent.

As you read each day, please share your reflections, comments, and questions. This blog is open to the public, so please use discretion about sharing personal information.

There are 40 days in Lent, not counting Sundays which traditionally are not numbered in the 40 days. There will be one reading from Luke’s Gospel for each of the 40 days. We will also read a passage for each Sunday in Lent from the New Common Lectionary. The Lectionary readings do not coordinate with our reading through the entire Gospel of Luke.

Our journey to the cross picks up speed today as we see the disciples prepare for what will be their last earthly meal with Jesus. As your read today’s passage, look for how God’s hand is intimately a part of Christ’s journey to the cross – no detail is left untouched. A perfect place has been prepared for this meal, which proves to be an important gathering as it sets the stage for Judas to betray Jesus.

Judas is a man who brings up various emotions in people – he is an important player in Jesus’ death but only because of his selfish and unloving actions.  Why would God chose Judas to be a part of the story of our salvation?

The meal that Jesus shared with his disciples in today’s reading is now known as the Last Supper and is the basis for our celebration of Holy Communion.  What is the role of Holy Communion in our faith? How have you experienced Jesus through your participation at the table?

  1. When I was young, I ‘took’ Communion. As I’ve grown in my faith, I’ve learned that I ‘receive’ Communion. It is not mine to take; it is Christ’s gift to me!

  2. Thank you, Sue. What an astute, beautiful point!
